Trinity aiming to make amends

By Aubrey Kuruppu
The Trinity ruggerites made all the running in last year’s league tournament, but sadly their efforts seemed to taper off at the end. They were beaten by Royal 0-8 in the Kandy leg of the Bradby, even though they won the shield on the back of a 21-12 triumph in the first leg.

The Peterites beat them, too but most galling of all was the loss to Kingswood in the final game that decided the first two slots.

Former Vidyartha, up country and Kandy SC full back and captain Anil Jayasinghe says he was disappointed with the results in 2008. His association with Trinity began in 2000 when he took charge of the under seventeen. After four years he was 'sent upstairs' to assist Nigel Krone with the first fifteen. From last year Anil has been in charge, while ex Sri Lanka player Pradeep Basnayake overlooks the forwards and does the motivational part.

The coach's ambition for 2009 is to remain unbeaten. He says that the back division, in which skipper and winger Visvajith Wijesinghe excels, has plenty of thrust and potential. The forwards, he confesses, are much stronger than they were last year. He remarks that his two lock forwards are 6/4 and 6/2 in height. So, he is upbeat about their ball-winning ability in the lines outs.

Trinity’s fans and supporters are demanding lot and will not settle for anything less than outstanding success. Those slightly longer in the tooth evoke fond memories of the deeds of Sahayam, Vanlangenberg, Ajith Abeyrathne, Tikiri Marambe etal. The more modern ones yearns for a repeat of Tyrrell Rajapakse’s outstanding team effort of 1987.
