Former Sri Lanka women’s cricket captain Shashikala Siriwardena who has been docked on charges of human smuggling has been given a temporary suspension.

According to operations manager SLC Ashley de Silva she would be initially suspended till June 2009.

She is supposed to have done this in October 2008 just prior to the women’s Asian Championships were on in Colombo.

However when questioned on this incident, she has confessed about her misdeed to the officials of the SLC.

As a result Siriwardena will now miss the women’s T20 World Cup tournament which is scheduled to begin in England on June 11.

Besides Siriwardena two other senior players – Suvini de Alwis and Dedunu Silva are also facing a temporary ban and will also miss the T20 World Cup. The charge against these players is that they not heeded to instructions given by the Lankan team manager during their World Cup tour to Australia.
