SLC dragged into telecom war

By S.R. Pathiravithana
Former sponsors of Sri Lanka Cricket Dialog Telecom have demanded their pound flesh with letter of demand for two million rupees to cricket’s administrators for postponing their five ODI FTP series against Zimbabwe.

Dialog struck a Rs.10 million deal with Sri Lanka Cricket that covered 24 days of cricket earlier this year. The deal enveloped five onedayers? and a T20 against India, 2 Tests and 3 ODIs against Pakistan and five ODIs against Zimbabwe.

However in the aftermath of the Lahore incident where the Lankan cricketers were under severe trauma, SLC decided to reschedule the Zimbabwe tour for a future date.

However even after the expiration of the contract Dialog continued to display their sponsorship hoardings at prime locations until the cricket administrators made a request to the former sponsors to remove the hoardings upon their signing of the new Rs550 million sponsorship deal with Mobitel who incidentally beat Dialog to their bid. Commenting on the development to The Sunday Times a senior spokesman of SLC said: “Yes, technically they may have a case, as they did not get their share of the Zimbabwe tour. However the exposure that they had from the Indian tour and the Pakistan tour was tremendous.

In comparison to that it is obvious that the exposure that they would have received from the Zimbabwe leg would be negligible as it would have not drawn much spectator interest. Besides that they also had a free run with the sponsorship hoardings for two months. We at this end feel that they had a deal that was good enough”.
