Gateway opens doors at National level

All-Island champs in Table Tennis and Runners-up in Basketball Gateway College Colombo, who has been very successful in the inter-international sports arena, has stepped up their performance to reach one-to-one at National Level.
At the recently concluded All Island Table Tennis tournament which was organized by the Kandy District Table Tennis Association that was held at the Indoor Stadium and Gymnasium of the University of Peradeniya, Gateway emerged Champions.

Jaliya Vimukthi ended up as Champion in the Open Men’s Singles category while Ravinka Kannangara was adjudged the Champion Player in the Under 15 and Under 18 age groups.

Ravinka was also selected as the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament. Besides the above achievement Gateway College Colombo emerged Runners-up of the All Island ‘A’ Division Basketball Tournament 2009. Gateway College beat leading schools like St. Michaels College, Batticaloa and CIS Kandy during the preliminaries. They then went on to beat Royal College, Colombo at the Quarters and Maris Stella College, Negombo in the Semis. Gateway lost to St. Benedicts College at the Finals.

Gateway’s Dhanushaka Gunasekera was named as the best Defensive Player of the tournament.

The success in Table Tennis and Basketball has added colour to Gateway’s excellent record in Athletics, where the school has produced many National Level athletes. Incidentally, Shehan Ambepitiya of Gateway College, Colombo was chosen to be the Sportsman of the Year and Miniruwani Samarakoon of Gateway College, Kandy was named the Up and coming Sportswoman of the Year at the recent Sri Lanka Schools Colours Awards.
