Swimming and Diving C’ships from June 11

The Sri Lanka Schools Aquatic Sports Association (SLASA) will conduct the annual Swimming and Diving Championships at the Sugathadasa Indoor swimming pool for the 36th successive year from June 11 to 14.

The four day event organized by the SLASA together with the Ministry of Education and sponsored by Nestle Lanka Ltd. The championship this year will see the participation of 1814 school children comprising of 1036 boys and 778 girls.

A total of 3138 individual events have been planned and apart from that 313 teams will participate in the relay events. Events will be held for both the boys and girls categories in the age group of Under 9, 11, 13, 15, 17 and 19. According to the officials 86 boys and 45 girls have confirmed their participation in the diving events.

Western Province has the highest number of participants with 690 from both the government and private schools and 533 in the boys and girls section. The opening ceremony is scheduled to be held on June 11 at 8.00 a.m. with the chief guest for the occasion being L.K. Jayaweera, Director of sports and Physical Education of the Ministry of Education.

The closing ceremony is scheduled for June 14 at 4.00 p.m. with Maithripala Sirisena, Minister of Agriculture Development and Agrarian Services, the President of the interim committee of SLASU, Gamini Lokuge, Minister of Sports and Bandula Egodage, External Affairs Manager Nestle Lanka Ltd gracing the occasion.-MSA.
