The Brett Lee factor and Ashes |
Brett Lee believes his 310 Test wickets will count for nothing when Australia's duelling pacemen embark on a shootout for Ashes spots by the English seaside today, while Captain Ricky Ponting has asked his spearhead for two things — speed and swing."
Asked what the 32-year-old needs to do to break back into the Australian attack, Ponting said: "I think he needs to bowl fast, first and foremost. He's at his best when he's bowling express pace. And I would like to see him swing the new ball, and I think that will happen because every training session he has been able to do that."
With only Mitchell Johnson assured of a bowling place for the first Test, the competition for places is intense and Lee's assessment is that his experience will not be enough to earn him a recall.
"I know that if I'm not doing the business out on the field, well then I don't expect to get chosen," Lee said. "You've taken 300 Test wickets — woopy-woop. I'm a very honest person and if I'm not bowling well, not taking wickets and not happy with the way the ball is coming out, I don't expect to be chosen. On the other side of the fence, if I'm taking wickets and the ball is coming out the way I want it to, then I'll be putting my hand up to take that brand-new ball for Australia. We'll see how we go." -The Age |
