Lankan lasses just a game away from glory |
By Namal Pathirage |
The roving Sri Lankan lasses beat Thailand 84-44 to enter the final of the 7th Asian Netball Championships in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The Sri Lankans remain unbeaten in the tournament up to now with five wins under their belt and are just one win away from a momentous feat and will hope to make it six in a row when they meet Singapore in Sunday’s final. Singapore entered the final beating hosts Malaysia 51 – 39 in the semi final yesterday.
In their first game Sri Lanka had a close game against Hong Kong which they pulled off by 80 – 72 and then beat Malaysia by 72 – 52. Their biggest victory came when they crushed the Indian team by 103 points to 27.
Earlier in the week the Sri Lankans breezed through their Group B fixtures and registered a massive 102-12 win over Pakistan.
So far 6’10” Tharshani Sivalingam has been the Lankan player who has stood out. In every game the opponents have found it very difficul to mark her.
Tharshani who hails from Jaffna was discovered in 2005 while representing the Batticaloa District in the all island inter-district championships held in Vavunia.
The final of the tournament is scheduled to be held at the Juara Stadium, Bukit Kiara, Kuala Lumpur at 3 p.m. Malaysian time. |
