Evaluating quality in education: A guideline for parents

Tertiary education is normally taken to include undergraduate and postgraduate education, as well as vocational education and training.

Colleges and universities are the main institutions that provide tertiary education. Collectively, these are sometimes known as tertiary institutions. Tertiary education generally results in the receipt of certificates, diplomas, or academic degrees. Quality - a word that denotes excellence and unsurpassed superiority - has been so misused by advertisers, spin doctors and propagandists, that its meaning is lost in the jumble of high hopes and false promises.

At ANC, however, we believe that quality is not an issue that can be compromised, particularly when it concerns our academic programmes. We are pleased that our programmes meet all the specifications that are indicative of quality and academic excellence.

Teaching factors: Substantial research suggests that the quality of the education institute is enhanced when lecturers have high academic skills, teach in the field in which they are trained and have more than a few years of experience. Students learn more from teachers with strong academic skills and classroom teaching experience than they do from teachers with weak academic skills and less experience

Many Faculty members at ANC have PhDs from prestigious U.S., UK, Australian and Canadian universities, while the rest have Master's degrees in the subject they teach. All lecturers have considerable teaching experience both internationally and locally. Classes are capped to maintain a low student-to-teacher ratio in order to maximize students' learning potential.

Core Curriculum: Courses should be given equal importance to students' major studies and be designed to enrich their education no matter what their chosen major.

Curriculum at ANC is designed and monitored by respective partner universities and provides smooth transfer options to many prestigious universities in the world. Students have a wide array of subject streams including Business, Engineering, IT, Health Sciences and Fine Arts. They benefit from focused course contents and a high level of intellectual rigour and cognitive challenge.

Learning Environment: Colleges should foster an environment for learning that ensures all students participate in class discussions, collaborative learning, individual research, and internships.
Similar to prestigious universities at ANC students are independent learners. They are encouraged to attend classes, check course outlines and course material. In many courses, there are group-based assignments, mock exams, lab sessions and on-line learning environments. Classroom participation and discussion are mandatory in almost all classes and often contribute to a percentage of final grades. Research-orientated projects are also a feature of most coursework, as are hands-on real world learning experiences and field trips.

Information Resources: Colleges should have a library that meets the needs of undergraduates. In addition, institutions should offer ample internet and computing resources.

State-of-the-art labs at ANC provide services for instruction, research and project work at computers with high speed internet connections. The library provides students with access to thousands of volumes and online library facilities in conjunction with our partner universities in US, UK and Australia.
Campus Life: The college community should be safe for students, and one that offers diversity in its extracurricular and cultural activities.

At ANC, a strict Code of Conduct is in effect, and students are expected to conduct themselves appropriately at all times. The Student Affairs Office, together with the Student Council, is responsible for overseeing discipline and coordinates all student related activities both on and off campus. Students are encouraged to join clubs and committees which foster and encourage involvements in the arts, community service, and sports.

ANC offers real university degree pathways in a real university environment, one that meets the most stringent standards of quality. All this at a price you cannot afford to miss. For more information contact call 0777 44 99 55 or visit us at 308 - 310, R.A De Mel Mawatha, Colombo - 3
