Myanmar military ruler coming here

Myanmar’s ruling military junta chief, General Than Shwe, will pay a three day visit to Sri Lanka beginning November 14.

Than Shwe

It is in response to an invitation extended by President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Mr. Rajapaksa visited Burma in June this year. The visit marked the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Myanmar (Burma). Sri Lanka established diplomatic ties with that country on June 7, 1949.

Sri Lanka’s Ambassador Newton Gunaratne, a former Chairman of Independent Television Network (ITN), is finalising arrangements with Myanmar authorities for the visit by the military ruler.

Myanmar’s military rulers seldom visited other countries but addressed the UN General Assembly last month.
