GTB Colombo steps in to meet steel demand for construction

A top steel manufacturer says it is ready to meet the demand for steel in the construction field of Sri Lanka following recent measures announced by the government aimed at boosting infrastructure, housing and construction-related activities in the North and East.

GTB Colombo Corporation, the largest Indo-Lanka BOI joint venture in the steel sector in Sri Lanka, can produce 50,000 MT or more of Thermo Mechanically Treated steel (TMT) at its fully automated plant in Katugampola Industrial Estate, Pannala , Director of the company R.C Chawla told the Sunday Times FT. He added that his company is ready to supply any quantity at any time as its factory has the capacity to produce over 50,000 MT GTB Steel to meet such requirements.

He said GTB is the leader in the projects market in Sri Lanka and steel supplier to most of the major contractors and high-rises in Sri Lanka including Maga Engineering, Tudawe Brothers, Nawaloka Constructions, State Engineering Corporation, Sanken Lanka, L.H. Piyasena and Company, Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau, I.C.C. etc.GTB was the first steel-maker in private sector with an automated plant and was the first in Sri Lanka again to produce the TMT bar which is the latest technology in this field, he said .
