Platters are here to bring back those good old hits

By Ranjit Vethakan

The Platters are in town, having jetted in yesterday, and are all set for their first- ever performances on Sri Lankan soil. They open their tour at a gala dinner concert at the Cinnamon Lakeside tomorrow, followed by two performances at Water's Edge on Tuesday and Wednesday!

The legendary Platters are one of the hardest working groups in the world, fitting in close to 250 shows per annum, on all continents. Formed way back in 1953, they are considered a Heritage Act, notwithstanding the several changes in personnel over the years.

This was due to the management keeping a close eye on the demands of the audiences around the world, hence the need also for the inclusion of contemporary hits. Lead singer, Monroe Powell, has been with the group all of 40 years and was, in fact, dreaming of a life in a totally different world when he was spotted by founder Buck Ram in 1970.

Today the aspiring Opera singer, with dreams of following in the footsteps of the late and great Mario Lanza, is one of the respected figures in the world of entertainment. He is ably supported by Bassman Don Gloude, Kenny Jaye and the vivacious Genevieve Dew who adds tremendous quality to the quartet with her extraordinary voice.

The Platters are no mugs; boasting of no less than 17 mighty hits, such as the endearing Only You, Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, The Great Pretender, My Prater, Harbour Lights, Twilight Time, just to name a few, and are renowned for their tight harmony and spectacular timing. Adding a local flavour to the three evenings are the outstanding local outfit, The Revelations, who are fast building a huge fan base in Sri Lanka and elsewhere with their quality sound!

The 11-strong group of Old Thomians have snared a catalogue of international awards and are certain to please the main stars of the evening, The Platters.

The Platters together with The Revelations ain’t an evening to be dismissed lightly. It is certain to be one of the greatest concerts of all time on Sri Lankan terrain.
