Farmers clash with Wild Life officials after jumbo jinks

Farmers of Lenama Kahatagasyaya in Dambulla had a confrontation with Wild Life Department officials after two wild elephants fell into a cultivation well which helps irrigate a large area of land.

The confrontation occurred after Wild Life officials employed backhoe machines to widen the well in the attempt to rescue the elephants but failed to restore the well to its original state after rescuing the elephants.

The animals had fallen into the well on Wednesday night while they were roaming and destroying the cultivations of the farmers. On the next day they were retrieved from the well.

The farmers shouted at the Wild Life officers who did not care to listen to their request to restore the well to its original state. Police had to finally intervene in the dispute. The officials told the farmers that they would help to restore the well, with the assistance of the Divisional Secretary.
