Foreign VIPs to attend SLFP convention

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) is holding its annual convention on a grand scale this year, at the R. Premadasa (Kettarama) Stadium in Maligawatte, Colombo, today.

Several foreign dignitaries will be attending the event. They include Anil Shastri, son of former Indian Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, Britain’s Shadow Defence Secretary Liam Fox MP, as well as VIPs from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Vietnam, China, and the Maldives.

The convention organisers said they expect at least 100,000 party members to be present, and that President Mahinda Rajapaksa is expected to deliver an important speech.

Special traffic plan today

A special traffic plan will be in effect in Colombo today, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., in view of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) annual convention, to be held at the R. Premadasa (Kettarama) Stadium, Maligawatte.

Police advise motorists to avoid roads in the vicinity of the convention venue. Police say traffic jams are likely on Baseline Road, Lesley Ranagala Mawatha; at the Peliyagoda roundabout; Ingurukade junction; Jumma Masjid junction; Jumma Masjid Road; Saddharma Mawatha; Old Bodhiraja Mawatha and New Bodhiraja Mawatha; Babapulle Bridge; Babapulle Road and Grandpass Road.

Traffic congestion is also expected at the Kosgas junction, the Sangaraja roundabout, Pradeepa Mawatha, Jayantha Weerasekere Mawatha and Panchikawatte Road. Motorists may enter Wellampitiya through the Orugodawatte junction, and Kolonnawa and Maradana through Dematagoda Road.
The police advise motorists to take alternative routes to avoid traffic congestion.

Motorists planning to use the Kandy Road or the Negombo Road are advised to drive from the direction of Borella, the Lipton Roundabout, Maradana or Pettah. They can also use Sangaraja Mawatha, Armour Street, the Ingurukade junction, Bandaranaike Mawatha, and the Japan-Sri Lanka Friendship Bridge.
