President attributes success to faith in democracy

President Mahinda Rajapaksa said he succeeded in surmounting the many challenges that the country faced because of his faith in democracy and the rule of law.

Addressing the annual general meeting of the Judicial Officers Association in Colombo, on Friday, the President said the system in the country was based on democratic governance with the legislative, the executive and the judiciary playing equally important roles. “Responsibility is not vested in one institution. Responsibilities are equally distributed among these three institutions,” he said.

Colombo’s Additional District Judge M.A.R.Marikkar was elected the President of the Association while Additional Magistrate Manjula Thilakaratna the Secretary.
