The import tax on rice and wheat grain was removed and the tax on sugar reduced with effect from midnight Friday.
Consumer Affairs Minister Bandula Gunawardena told the Sunday Times that a drop in the retail prices of these food items can be expected soon, as wholesale prices are adjusted.
Mr. Gunawardena said Basmathi rice from Pakistan will be available from next week and sold at Rs. 70 per kilo.
Two weeks ago the government announced that Basmathi rice stocks would be available during the festive season.
