Watch out for 2010

Last year was certainly not the most overwhelming of years when considering the films that graced the big screen but there were two things that audiences could be joyous about. Firstly, those little gems that did pop up from time to time amidst an endless salvo of mediocrity and the bittersweet fact that Marvel and its counterparts seemed to ease up on their ultimate plan to make every comic book conceivable into a summer action blockbuster.

Looking ahead, the coming year has a string of tasty films to look forward to and my enviable task was to list ten of the most anticipated films of 2010. Before we begin our countdown I should remind you that they are in no particular order and may all turn out to be woeful films but nonetheless hope remains until it is doused by the films themselves.

10. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1

I realise that some may think it was ill-advised to begin with Harry Potter considering what rot has been put on the big screen the past eight times. Seven times? I’ve lost count I think.

Warner Bros needs to make money and now that their nerdy wizard-boy’s saga is finally ending what better way to dupe gullible fans into filling their coffers than to split an already laughable story into two?

So why is it on my list you ask? Well, simply because, despite my clear envy of these brilliant pieces of work there are numerous fans twitching their spectacles and sharpening their wand waving skills in eager anticipation of the next instalment.

9. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse

I really am on a roll now. Did someone say love-triangle between vampires, werewolves and humans? Once again I can feel the angry gazes of millions of teenagers smacking their lips at the thought of this bloodsucking teenfest.

I’m guessing I couldn’t have gotten away with leaving this one out unless of course I wanted an angry mob of fanatic teenagers stalking me. Of course I could always distract them with some bubblegum. Moving on.

8. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader

While many Narnia fans and Narnians alike were a little disappointed by the fact that some of the books in the epic didn’t make it to film, anticipation is still growing over the next one which sees Lucy and Edmund return to Narnia with an unwitting cousin, Eustace.

7. The Last Airbender

Avatar has been a beloved cartoon series viewed by those of various ages and IQ levels and the announcement that it will be made into a full length feature was well received by most. M. Night Shyamalan’s hand in it though could go either way with his last few projects ending in disaster.

6. Alice in Wonderland

Tim Burton’s latest collaboration with Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter will look to darken the completely innocent children’s book by Lewis Carroll. Just like the times before, this Burtonised fairytale will be expected to stun its audiences and annoy ignorant parents looking for a fun visit to the cinema with their kids.

5. Robin Hood

Ridley Scott is back and with him is his trusty man-servant Patsy, I mean Russell Crowe. I’m not sure how well Crowe would do as the legendary archer/thief/do-gooder but let’s face it whenever these two make a film together it’s always pure magic. Add Cate Blanchett into the mix and well, this film is one to really look forward to.

4. The A-Team

I’m not quite sure what all the fuss is about but apparently people are dying to see what this would turn out like. Come to think of it so am I. This film is probably destined to be an absolute stinker especially now that they have got off to an inauspicious start by not casting Mr.T. I mean what good is an A-team remake without the T-factor.

3. Prince of Persia

Out of all the people to cast as the Prince they chose Jake Gyllenhaal and while this move has clearly aggravated me it won’t stop me from queuing up to see this on arrival. An epic video game which has been an important part of growing up for many video game buffs this film has the potential of being the most appreciated or most disappointing film of the year.

2. Inception

Although nothing much is known about its plot a few things have been revealed. Firstly that it is a Christopher Nolan film and if you know anything of the man this could only be a positive thing. Furthermore Leonardo DiCaprio, Ellen Paige along with veterans such as Michael Caine and Ken Watanabe have been cast in this film which has only been described as ”a contemporary science fiction action thriller set within the architecture of the mind”.

1. Iron Man 2

Did you really think I’d miss this one? After the first instalment of the iron clad, missile launching, butt kicking superhero surprised all of us in 2008, fans and Marvel executives look forward in eager anticipation of the second coming of Iron Man. Robert Downey Jr. will reprise his role as Tony Stark while Don Cheadle will be replacing Terrence Howard as James Rhodes which in my book may be a little off-putting. I know I said there was no order to this list but this one certainly is in its right place as the most anticipated film in the coming year.
