Friday night winds and rain create havoc

Strong winds and rain on Friday night damaged more than 40 houses in and around the island and resulted in the loss of a life in Kandy.

Disaster Management Centre Assistant Director Pradeep Kodippili said that a man in Kundasale near Kandy was electrocuted when he tried to move a tree fallen on an electricity line. Nuwara Eliya witnessed maximum damage with 30 houses being damaged due to the strong winds that hit the district.

Mr. Kodippili said Friday night’s winds were the worst in the whole week. Met Department officials said that showers would continue for the next two or three days in different parts of the island, while the frequency of the strong winds would reduce.

Meanwhile, there is a probability for south-westerly winds to hit the region. These winds would be at a speed of 40-50 km per hour but could increase up to 60 km per hour.

Officials added that coastal areas around the island would get showers throughout the week while the sea would be rough for the next couple of days.
