By M.Shamil Amith

Several less privileged athletes from a number of outstation schools enjoyed great success at the recently concluded 87th All Island Schools’ Athletic Championships as well as the Junior National Athletic meet.

During the All Island Athletics Championships, six of them clinched the top spots in their respective events, with Ishara Dayananda from Ferguson Girls’ High School, winner of the 100m and 200m hurdles, adjudged the meet’s Best Female Athlete.

Pabasara Senanayake of St. Joseph’s Girl School in Kegalle swept to victory in three Under 18 sprint events while Sumana Balika Vidyalaya’s Nayomika Jayatilleke showed equal dominance in the 100m and 400m hurdles to run out a clear victor. However she fell just short in the 400 metre event to come in third.

Chamika Jayamini from Sumana Balika Vidyalaya in Ratnapura reigned supreme in the long distance events, winning the 800 meter and 1500 meter races in the under 187 category. In the field events Nimesh Siriwardena from Galenbidunuwewa Central College was placed first in the under 16 High Jump. Hiruni Weerasekera from Ferguson Girls High School emerged first and second in the Under 20 Triple and Long Jump events.

During the Junior National Athletics Championships Sashipraba Jayasinghe won the 100 meter, 200 meter and 400 meter sprints to earn the ‘Best Under 23 Female Athlete’ title. Ishara Dayana took the ‘Best under 20 Female Athlete Nayomika Gimhani won the 100m and 400m Hurdles and came third in the 400 meters event, to earn the “Priyanthi Gunasekera” Trophy for the best Female Hurdler.

Like in the previous meet, Hiruni Weerasekera once again proved her might by coming first in the Under 20 Triple Jump and second in the Long Jump. Nimesha Siriwardena came second in Under 16 High Jump while Chamika Jayamini came first in the 3000 meter and 1500 meter Under 20 events. All the young athletes that competed in the two meets were sponsored by Janashakthi.
