Royal Institute of Colombo brings University of London degrees to your doorstep

Royal Institute of Colombo (RIC), the higher education wing of Royal Institute, is the Affiliate Centre of the University of London. It has been delivering the Degree and Diploma programmes of the world renowned University of London and the London School of Economics and Political Science, opening new opportunities particularly to Sri Lankan students to read for University of London Degrees and Diplomas from the comfort of their homes and at a fraction of the cost of studying for the same Degree or Diploma in the United Kingdom.

Royal Institute of Colombo has built on and started teaching for Degrees in many different areas such as Accounting, Banking, Business, Development, Economics, Finance, Information Systems, International Relations, Law, Management, Mathematics and Sociology. It also teaches for the Diplomas in Economics, Law and Social Sciences.

A good number of foreign degree programmes offered in Sri Lanka today are in association with foreign universities of mediocre standing and are perhaps misleading prospective students. Royal Institute of Colombo is however quite different in that it is linked with and strongly supported by one of the best universities in the world - the internationally reputed University of London, which provides an unrivalled range of educational opportunities of outstanding breadth and quality to more than 43,000 students overseas.

All programmes offered through this system are developed by academics within the Colleges of the University of London which ensures that University of London awards are recognized world-wide for their quality and value and students benefit immensely from the academic rigour and cutting edge research undertaken within the University.

There are advantages in following these programmes at RIC as they are kept up to date with what is being taught at the University of London and are being constantly monitored by the academics of the University of London to ensure that the delivery of the programmes are up to the right standards they have set. London School of Economics has been ranked at an impressive second place in England in respect of studies all round and holds the first place in studies related to Economics.

It is relevant to state that academic staff of the University of London develop the syllabuses, write study materials, set examination papers, provide model answers and mark scripts. All examinations are conducted by the University itself. Our students are examined to the same standard as that required of students enrolled at the university's constituent colleges and therefore the degrees and other awards they receive shall have attained the same academic standard. Therefore reading for a University of London Degree or Diploma at RIC is one of the greatest investments one can make.

The academic staff of RIC, who comprises of both permanent and visiting lecturers have been picked after assuring that they are up to the job at hand. The lecturing panel has been carefully picked and selected from the best in the country and the senior lecturing panel includes lecturers who have qualifications at Master’s and/or Ph.D. levels in their respective fields.

The teaching methodology at RIC includes lectures and also interactive and self learning. Students in the Diploma programmes receive more time for tutorial and discussion classes whereas in general one third of the contact hours in each class is allocated for discussion and tutorial classes. Monthly assessments of student performance are also done.

The RIC library is among the best in the country. It is fully furnished and automated which has a collection of over 15,000 books in various fields of study, most of which are hard to locate locally, plus CDs covering the essential text books, supplementary books and also other reading material which are recommended by the University of London for the various programmes that are offered. In addition students also have access to the on-line databases and encyclopedias. Students reading for Degrees and Diplomas are also provided on-line access to the University of London library.

The examination results of students of Royal Institute of Colombo have been most impressive throughout maintaining well over 95% pass rate, candidates who sat their B.Sc and LL.B (Hons) Degrees in the year 2008 achieved an envious 99% pass rate which speaks volumes for the excellent academic performance of RIC.

In the year 2009 Royal Institute of Colombo was able to produce 14 World's Best results in certain subjects computed on the basis of results of all overseas students and, those of the constituent colleges of the University of London, which shows the efficacy of our delivery of the University of London programmes.

The LL.B (Hons) degree programme conducted by RIC is extremely popular among students, not only due to its acceptance as an internationally recognized academic Degree, but also because it is considered the best option to qualify as an Attorney-at-Law in Sri Lanka by sitting the Law College Examinations after obtaining the Degree. LLB is a Degree that has the reputation as the "International Gold Standard" in legal education which is also a qualifying Law Degree to progress onto a Solicitor or Barrister in many jurisdictions world-wide and an ideal platform for any career in legal practice or business.

With 20years experience in teaching for the LLB Degree, we have produced the World's Best LL.B graduate in 2007 which is evidence of the quality of teaching at the RIC. We have seen an increasing number of children of members of the legal profession enrolling either in the LL.B Degree or Diploma in Law programme as they are aware of the value of the RIC law programme. The response has been very encouraging.
