Rajarata undergrads become benefactors

By Athula Bandara

In the true spirit of social service, undergrads of the Rajarata University last Thursday distributed items such as text books, school bags and related equipment to students of Siyambalagswewa Vidyalaya, Tantirimale.

The school situated about 40 kms from Anuradhapura conducts classes for around 75 students from Grade one to nine and exists under difficult conditions. With the principal there are only seven teachers, while basic facilities are lacking.

The parents of the students are mostly farmers. There is no school transport and water is scarce. Though two toilets were put up by an NGO there is no water supply to them.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Aruni Weerasinghe joined the campus students in the function at which refreshments were also served. The undergrads cleaned the school premises including the well.

The school authorities showered high praise on the undergrads for their voluntary service.
