NIBM has mastered building competencies

The National Institute of Business Management (NIBM) was established in 1968. On June 1 1976, the Institute was incorporated as the National Institute of Business Management by an Act of Parliament. Since its establishment, the NIBM has aimed at achieving excellence in the programmes it offers to clients drawn from both the public and private sectors of Sri Lanka, as well as those from overseas who availed themselves of its services.

Today NIBM falls under the purview of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and is a self sustained, internationally accepted, UGC approved degree awarding institute. In 2009 NIBM won the Merit Award of National Quality Award (NQA) and ISO-9001-2008 certificates in recognition of its excellent service.

NIBM aims to be the best education Institute where knowledge workers are produced and updated with the latest layer of knowledge in the universe, which will result in creating a lot of employment opportunities for its customers in the world of work.

To achieve this objective two internal divisions have been established namely, the Productivity and Management Development Division and the Management Information Systems Division. Each division is managed by professional staff and headed by a functional director.

Productivity and Management Development Division
The Productivity and Management Development Division is primarily responsible for conducting management development programmes for building competencies in managerial personnel in both the public and private sector organizations. These programmes facilitate career advancement, in addition to improving productivity in organizations where these managers work.

Tailor-made training programmes, workshops and seminars are also conducted by the Management Development Division.

Management Information Systems Division
NIBM is proud to be recognized as the pioneer computer training institute by providing qualifications and training in the field of Information Technology in the country.

The Management Information Systems (MIS) Division is responsible for conducting computer programmes to equip participants with skills required to obtain employment, and gain recognized qualifications.

The division constantly revises course modules in keeping with rapid changes in the IT field. The MIS Division offers two Degree programme, a Higher Diploma, a Diploma and several Certificate programmes.

The NIBM introduced its first Diploma in Computer System Design programme in 1979. Today many of those trained personnel are making significant contribution in local and foreign organizations. It is a one year full time course and is offered thrice a year.

NIBM's Computer Diploma (DCSD) and Higher Diploma (HDCBIS) are the only Sri Lankan Training programmes accredited by the British Computer Society (BCS) www.bcs.org/exam/exempt
Bachelor of Science Degree Programme in Management Information systems (BSc in MIS) was initiated in 1996 in collaboration with the University College Dublin of the National University of Ireland. Already, over 1000 BSc graduates have been produced by NIBM in the field of Management Information Systems.
All these graduates are working in very senior positions in Sri Lanka and in foreign companies. Several of those graduates have completed their Master's Degrees and some are reading for their PhD.
The degree offered is the same degree offered in Ireland and more than 50% of the academic content is delivered by lecturers from the University College Dublin.

The thirteenth BSc degree batch commenced their studies in August 2009. From 2010 onwards the MIS division is conducting their own BSc degree programme approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

In 2007 the MIS Division received ISO 9001:2000 certification to prove the true quality of education and services provided by the Division.

Regional Centres
In its attempts to take Management and Computer education to the provinces, the NIBM has set up three regional centres in Kurunegala, Kandy and Galle, which offer various high end diploma/certificate courses. The Kandy Centre was established in 1996 to meet the growing demand in the Central Province. The centre is now located in Katugastota with a better learning environment and modern learning facilities.

The Galle Centre targets to cater to the Management and IT education needs of the Southern Province. It is a newly built, fully fledged institution that guarantees a step by step education career path to every academic who enters and aspires for higher education with NIBM. Various in-house programmes, workshops and training programmes especially designed for the Galle Corporate Sector are also conducted.

Therefore this new regional centre is expected to contribute to the country's educational needs as well as the commercial needs which will mainly benefit all the requirements of the Southern Province.
