Deserter fails in escape bid after sentence

An army deserter broke free from prison guards and tried to run away when Kandy’s Chief Magistrate Lalith Ekanayake sentenced him to eight years jail for a series of robberies.The prison guards, however, gave chase and overpowered him.

The incident took place on Friday and he is now facing fresh charges for attempting to flee from custody.
