Championship fever hits Colombo

Competitors from Sri Lanka and the Asian Region are gearing up for the 4th Footwork International Dancesport Championship 2010 on October 10 at the Hilton Colombo. Entries are coming in fast and at the dance schools in Sri Lanka, training is going on at a challenging pace.

Excitement is running high as it is after an interval of three years that an international dancesport championship is being held in Colombo and most local dancers have not had an opportunity to participate in competition dancing at an international level. A record number of Sri Lankan participants will be seen at this year’s Championship.

The Championship will be made up of 18 events; the Standard (Ballroom) section and the Latin American section will comprise of nine events each. In each section, the events will be - Solo Waltz (Standard)/Solo Cha Cha (Latin American), Freshers A, Freshers B, Juniors, Seniors, Beginners, Novices, Pre- Amateur and Amateur. In each event, the competitors are required to perform a number of dances. For example, the Latin American Beginners event will consist of two dances, Cha Cha and Jive and the Latin American Amateur event will feature five dances –Cha Cha, Samba, Rumba, Paso Doble and Jive.

The Championship will be conducted in two segments. The afternoon session from 3 p.m. till 5 p.m. will comprise of the heats for each event. The main show, which starts at 6.30 p.m, will feature the finalists of each event. The Championship will start off with the contestants parade where each team from the participating countries will be introduced to the audience. The first half of the show will be the Standard section and the Latin American events will follow in the second half.

The event is endorsed by Sri Lanka Tourism. Hilton Colombo is the official host hotel, the official printer is Softwave. The print media sponsors are The Daily Mirror and The Sunday Times and electronic media sponsors YES FM and MTV.
