Royal Asiatic Society lecture on Buddhism and colonial rule

The monthly lecture of the Royal Asiatic Society of Sri Lanka on 'Resurgence of Buddhism under Colonial Rule" presented by Prof. M. U. de Silva will be held at 5 p.m. tomorrow, October 25 at the Gamini Dissanayake Auditorium of the Mahaweli Centre, No. 96, Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha, Colombo 7.

The lecture is open to the public.

Pera alumni get together

The Alumni Association of the University of Peradeniya , Colombo Chapter will hold its family get together at the Rock House, Gangarama Road, Piliyandala on Sunday, October 31 from 9.30 a.m. onwards.

An array of activities- games for young and old, competitions, prizes and surprises have all been planned. Music will be provided by Mahanama Wickramasinghe and his group with vocals by Jayalath Manoratne, Nissanka Diddeniya Mahanama and Mark Anthony of Sinhabahu fame.
Tickets are available with committee members of the Colombo Chapter and at the gate on the day.

Harpo’s cafes & restaurants recognise staff

Wasantha Jayawardene, Stewarding Supervisor from the Bay Leaf Restaurant, Tuan Nazeemdeen Sapideen from The Commons restaurant, Kamal Rajapakse, Trainee Cook at Park Street Mews and Dinesh Punchihewa , Waiter at Café Che were chosen as the Employees of the Quarter when Harpo's Cafes & Restaurants - Bay Leaf, The Commons Coffee House, Park Street Mews & Café Che - introduced their staff recognition programme last week.

"It's important to me to reinforce dignity and respect among our employees. And also to identify the employee who goes the extra mile to please our customers and is also a team worker. I firmly believe that rewards and recognition definitely benefits both the employer and the employee," said Harpo Gooneratne, M D, presenting them with a Certificate of Recognition and letter of commendation at a special ceremony held at each restaurant.

Lion Ladies fund raiser

'Rhythm for Vision', the annual fund raiser of the Lion Ladies of District 306 B2 will be held at the Cinnamon Lakeside hotel on October 31. All proceeds will go towards obtaining an ophthalmic laser machine for diabetic retinopathy for the Lions Golden Jubilee Eye Hospital which renders invaluable service to needy patients.

Launch of DVD

The National Trust of Sri Lanka will launch the DVD "From Metre to Melody: A Musical Heritage Explored" , a production sponsored by the Nations Trust Bank on Tuesday, October 26 at 6.30 p.m. at the Grand Ballroom, Galle Face Hotel, Colombo.

Exhibition on the art of video installation

'Beyond Peace', an exhibition on the art of video installation, by the students of the Department of Architecture, University of Moratuwa is on at the British Council today.

This follows a series of workshops for Level One students introducing them to video installation art, a combination of video, light, sound and performance, conducted by Senior Lecturers Prasanna Pitigala Liyanage and Sithumina Ratnamalala who are also architects.

The exhibition is held in cooperation with the German Cultural Centre and the British Council.

Annual scientific sessions of College of Venereologists

The 15th annual scientific sessions of the Sri Lanka College of Venereologists headed by President Dr. Chandrika Wickramasuriya were held at the auditorium of the Hatton National Bank Towers recently.

The chief guest was Dr. Iyanthi Abeyewickreme, Regional Advisor HIV/AIDS/STI, World Health Organization, Regional Office for South East Asia while the guest of honour was Professor Stephen Green, Consultant Physician in Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine.

Asian amateur ranking dance championships here

The 'World Dance Council Asian Amateur League Ranking Championships' is scheduled to take place in Colombo in July, 2011.

Directress of Rhythm World Shiromi Perera, proudly made this announcement, in her capacity as International Director for Sri Lanka under the World Dance Council Asian Amateur League.
The Championships in Sri Lanka will be organized by 'Rhythm World' in association with the Sri Lanka Conventions Bureau with Coordinating Event Director Haadia Galely of "Mantra Moods" and co-directed by Ms. Aleena Tan, President of the Singapore Ballroom Dance Teachers' Association and Vice President of the World Dance Council Asian Amateur League.

Fatima Church celebrates silver jubilee

Battaramulla's Fatima Church will celebrate its silver jubilee today. Archbishop of Colombo the Rt. Rev. Dr. Malcolm Ranjith who was on Thursday elevated by Pope Benedict XVI to the rank of a Cardinal will be the chief celebrant at the silver jubilee festive High Mass at 7.30 a.m. today.

Creations by the elderly

'Handful of Tranquility', an exhibition and sale organized by the Ceylon Bible Society will be held for the seventh consecutive time on Friday, October 29 and Saturday, 30, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at "Bible House", No 293, Galle Road, Colombo 3.

The exhibition offers elderly citizens a wonderful opportunity to exhibit their talents and express their creativity.

Grandmothers here’s your chance!

'Silver threads among the gold', a rare pageant for grandmothers has been organized by the Lion Ladies Committee of Lions District 306 B1 on November 14 at 5 p.m. at the Continental Hotel Colombo 1.

It is not just a beauty pageant but is being held for a worthy cause, as the funds generated will be channelled to upgrade eye-care services at the Marawila Base Hospital, provide an oxygen concentrator to the Jaffna General Hospital and refurbish Ward 12 of the Angoda Mental Hospital.
