Dec. 6 finals for 'Inter-University Enterprise Mobility Software Competition'

Sri Lankan IT-BPO body SLASSCOM announced recently that December 6 had been slated as the date for the finals of the "Inter-University Enterprise Mobility Software Competition," an event it is organising in conjunction with the local office of US-based Motorola.

According to its announcement, which quotes Motorola's local Country Manager Anuradha Tennakoon as saying the competition would "explore, expose and promote innovative skills of our undergraduates [preparing] Sri Lanka to be a leading Mobile Application Development Centre in the world;" the competition was launched in early June this year by inviting selected universities and university affiliation colleges to send their undergraduates to a kick-off seminar we had at University of Colombo School of Computing premises.

At the end of the seminar, we invited the undergraduates to submit proposals and it was extremely encouraging to see that we received 44 proposals from the 8 institutes invited. After a lengthy evaluation process, 12 proposals were selected for the finals and the selected teams were again invited and given a hands-on training and required resources for them to develop the applications. In addition to their mentors from the universities, we also assigned mentors to each team from Motorola R&D centre staff who provided constant coaching and guidance to the undergraduates during last five months."

Also revealed was that the finals would feature a showdown between Ruhuna, Moratuwa, Colombo, Kelaniya and Peradeniya universities along with APIIT, SLIIT and IIT with winners receiving cash prizes and certificates; while all participants would be able to avail themselves of "opportunities to enter into business deals with potentials buyers for their solutions and increase the potential employability with the skills gained through the latest mobile technologies."
