A nest in my garden

By Ilma Waris (Primary 4), Brilliant Stars Int. College, Matara

One day, I heard my sister calling me. I went to see what has happened. She showed me a nest in our lime tree. It was a Hair Bird’s nest. A few days passed and there were two eggs. I was very happy. I was looking for the babies.

The next day I came from school and went straightaway to the nest. The eggs were not there. I was very sad. A few days later I saw another nest in the lime tree. It was hanging on a branch. It was different from the old nest. It was made from dried leaves and the bark of trees.

There was a hole in the middle. I saw some cotton inside the hole. I noticed a tiny bird visiting the nest everyday. I found out that it was the tiny bird’s nest. After some days there were two eggs. The bird was sitting in the nest.

After two weeks the eggs hatched and two baby birds appeared. I was very excited. I hope one day the birds will fly freely. Even the eyes were not opened and no feathers for the babies. I will be very sad if the birds fly away from us.

A trip to Mahiyangana

By Udani Navaratne (11 years), Mahamaya Girls’ College, Kandy

It was early morning. After we took our breakfast, we started our journey to Mahiyangana. On our way we saw the Victoria Reservoir. My father, who is an electrical engineer, told us how water generates and how we get water to our homes. We had a snack and started again.

After three hours we were in the Mahiyangana temple. There were veddhas sitting by the road. They were dark as the night sky. We took some flowers and removed our shoes and went to the temple. There were two baby elephants in the temple. My brother and my father touched the older elephant.
I too tried to touch it but my mother held me tight.

After that we went to the New Rest House to have our lunch. After lunch we went to see the Sora Bora Wewa. We sat on a big stone near the wewa because we were tired. Then we took a lot of photographs of the Sora Bora Wewa. My mother bought me a mango parcel to eat. After that we started our journey home.

We saw the Randenigala Reservoir. My father explained about the Randenigala Reservoir. It was seven o’clock when we returned home.

Tigers

By Samith Ailapperuma (Grade 7), Trinity College, Kandy

Tigers are the biggest of the big cats. They are found in many countries. There are many types of tigers such as Bengal tiger, Javan tiger, Caspian tiger, Siberian tiger, South Chinese tiger, Sumatran tiger, Bali tiger etc.

The largest is the Siberian tiger, while the smallest is the Sumatran tiger. Some tigers carry a gene which carries white fur and brown stripes. A litter may carry both normal and white cubs. Tigers have good hearing and night vision. Adult tigers are solitary animals. Tigresses and their cubs live together until adulthood when the cubs leave their mother.

Each tiger has a special pattern of stripes which slightly differs from others. Tigers are good swimmers.
Tiger attacks on humans have also been reported. Most of these man-eaters have broken teeth or
injuries, which makes it impossible to catch normal prey. Many tigers come into villages because of habitat loss. They live up to 15 – 18 years.

The tiger is an endangered species and should be protected.

Our neighbours

By Piyumi Nirmala (Grade 8), Mo/Mahanama National College

Our neighbours are very important. Neighbours are very valuable and useful to us. Also they are very essential. Sometimes neighbours are like friends. They are helpful to us. We always help our neighbours. We visit our neighbours. We share some food. Our neighbours come to our home.
Some neighbours are very kind. When we are sad they console us. Some neighbours waste our time.

My country

By Ama Prabuddhika (Grade 5), B / Kuda Kusum B.M.M.V.

The name of my country is Sri Lanka. It is a small island. It is in the Indian Ocean. It has nine provinces.
Our President is Mahinda Rajapaksa. Our capital city is Sri Jayewardenapura Kotte. Our main exports are tea, rubber and coconut.

There are many communities in it. They are Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims. There are beautiful
waterfalls, rivers, mountains and flower gardens in it. The longest river is Mahaweli. The highest mountain is Pidurutalagala. The highest waterfall is Bambarakanda. I love my country.

My pen

By Sachini Wijekoon (11 years), Girls’ High School, Kandy

My pen is very beautiful. It is very long. My pen is blue in colour. It can write nicely. I have never seen a beautiful pen like this. I can’t write without my pen. My pen likes me too. My prettiest gift is the pen. It helps me to work in my school very much.

The person whom I like the most

By Sajani Fernando (Grade 8), St. Bridget’s Convent

The person whom I like the most is my sister. Her name is Samali Fernando. She is seven years old.
She is charming, nice and sometimes irritating. One of the reasons I like her is because she likes to play pretend games with me.

My sister is very ambitious and hopes to be a Hollywood Star because she is good at dancing, singing and acting. My sister, though she’s small, she’s clever and helps me and encourages me in everyway. My sister’s motto is “Talent isn’t genius”.

My sister loves to play football. She is smart, talented, gorgeous and top of her class and everybody envies her. One of the reasons why I like her is because she encourages me in my writing. I hope that my sister will be famous and rich and she will not forget me.

I will certainly not forget her because she is the angel who played with me, studied with me and did daredevil tricks with me.

My true friends

By Christeen Dias (Grade 9), Our Lady of Victories Convent, Moratuwa

We’ve joined together as classmates
As a new year begins
A year full of learning
While we become friends
We’ll share and be kind
As we work and play
And our friendship will grow
With each passing day

Binendri is good
She helps me in my studies
Sometimes we study together
She is very charming, talented and an
open-hearted girl

I have a lot of friends
Sanduni is special from them
She is so sweet, faithful, affable and
appreciative
I totally love her curly kind of brown hair
She looks like my angelic sister
She is gregarious, dependable and sociable

Roshen looks like a pumpkin
So I call her “Pumps”
She is very funny and amiable
She makes me laugh thousands of times

I love my friends so much
They are flowers in my life garden
They make my life colourful everyday
They spray sweet moments to my life

A country I would like to visit

By Sumaiya Siyanudeen (Grade 4), Ilma Int. Girls’ School

There are many countries in the world. So, we cannot visit all of them. Anyway there is one country that I would like to visit very much. It is Australia which is the smallest continent in the world. I like to visit Australia because my father’s younger sister lives there.

My aunt lives in Adelaide but the capital of Australia is Sydney. There is a famous opera house in Sydney. I like to visit it. The Great Barrier Reef which is one of the best known coral reefs in the world is in Australia. The Murray Darling river is the longest river.

Kangaroos are found in Australia. My favourite animal is the kangaroo. So I have a great desire to see these animals especially how they carry their young in a pouch. My aunt has invited us to visit her, so my father has promised to take us there during the December holidays. I am eagerly waiting for this visit. I think that I am lucky because I have got the chance to make my hopes and ideas come true. I like Australia very much!
