A series of programmes to commemorate Vesak together with the 2600th Sri Sambuddhathva Jayanthi were held in various parts of the country.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa formally declared the year spanning from this Vesak Day to next year's Vesak Day as the Sambuddatva Jayanthi year, from the historic Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi premises in Anuradhapura last Saturday. Since then, a series of events were held.

Some of the main events to mark the 'Sambuddatva Jayanthi' were held at the BMICH. More than 30 pandals and giant Vesak lanterns were on display within the Colombo city and outskirts. Large crowds were seen witnessing the decorations.

A large number of Vesak dansel too were set up in various parts of the country. Meanwhile the International Buddhist Conference jointly organized by India and Sri Lanka was inaugurated yesterday, in Kandy by President Rajapaksa.
