Pizza paradise

Mirror Magazine went on a pizza hunt for the best pizzas in Colombo. Here is a run down of the main contenders

MICHAELANGELO

The ‘Pizza Margherita’ is the masterpiece at Michaelangelo’s. Located on the Nawala Road and under new management this small pizza shop lets you take a peek at how it’s been made.

The Margherita is the simplest pizza and is the base for every other pizza on the table. To be good you need to get your basics right and they do.

The thin crust is topped with Tomato, Mozzarella, and Oregano and baked in the wood fire oven. Later the 12’ pizza garnished with basil and a splash of olive oil is served piping hot. Although the flavor of the cheese is strong, the big bite size basil leaves balance out the taste making it one of the best pizzas around Colombo.

IL PONTE

Il Ponte, the Italian restaurant housed at Hilton Colombo is famous for their pizza. Colombo cannot get enough of it. And the most renowned is a pizza with a Sri Lankan twist.

‘The Blue Mountain’ does in fact take you to new heights. Each mouthful is a burst of luscious flavor. Although the taste is familiar it keeps you wanting more.

The topping includes both typically Italian and distinctively local ingredients; Tomato, Oregano, Black Olives, Spicy Chicken, Onion and rings of Green pepper.

Baked for seven to ten minutes the Blue Mountain is served with Balsamic Vinegar, Olive Oil, Tabasco sauce, Garlic Paste, Chili flakes and extra Mozzarella.

REGINA MARGERITA

This cozy Italian restaurant down park road really sets the mood to dig into that pizza. The checkered table cloth, the napkins colored in the shades of the Italian flag, the displayed wine collection and the typically Italian hostess completes the setting. The must try at Regina Margherita is the ‘Parma Ham Pizza’.

he authentic thin crust pizza is light and brittle topped with Mozzarella and Tomato, and is baked to perfection in the traditional wood fire oven. The highlight is the thinly sliced Parma Ham and the crisp rocket leaves layered on top.

Biting into the pizza you can feel the ham almost melt in your mouth and the rocket is simply refreshing. The flavours complement each other flawlessly and the result is a yummy slice of heaven. A dash of chili oil does wonders to the Sri Lankan palette.

THE BAY LEAF

When you try the best pizzas in Colombo you cannot miss The Bay Leaf. To be more precise you have to taste the mouth watering ‘Pizza Romanga’.

Serving Sri Lanka’s very own home grown pizza brand, Harpo’s Pizza, this restaurant is known for the idyllic ambiance and the open air service. Mastering Italian cuisine, The Bay Leaf is renowned for their nineteen inch, biggest in town pizzas. The first thing that hits you when presented with the Romagna is the flavor infused aroma.

It is amazing how good it smells. The thin crust is not just crisp but crunchy. You can hear it break in your mouth. Topped with Mozzarella, Tomato, Bacon, Smoked chicken and Mushrooms, the Pizza Romagna truly pleases the senses. You can feel a variety of textures and flavors in the chicken, bacon and mushroom. The Romagna without doubt is one of Colombo’s best.
