"The Entire World is Open and waiting for you" says Supun, a student of IIHS "

Yet another impressive achievement for IIHS, the premiere healthcare training institute in Sri Lanka, where students following the Physiotherapy / Physical Therapy Assistant programme have excelled in the recently concluded examination, held by the State University of New York ( SUNY Canton).
Speaking on the achievement Supun Fernando, a fine product of IIHS, shared his views with the youth of the country stating that "the entire world is open and waiting for you, but nothing comes easy. If we focus and work hard then the sky is the limit for all Sri Lankan students." He further states, "I am 23 years old and I obtained my primary and secondary education at St Mary's College, Chilaw.

I come from a middle income family where my parents are both Government servants. I had a dream to become a doctor and was unable to get in to a local University due to the extreme competition where only 1200 are gain entrance of 30,000 Biology students. Though many of my friends and relatives thought I should re-sit the Advanced Level examination, I did not want to waste a second of my youth and started looking for other avenues.

I was lucky enough to come across the IIHS Physiotherapy Therapy programme affiliated to State University of New York, where I have to complete 02 years of studies at IIHS and then move in to New York for the final year and sit for the Licensing examination in USA, hence I can obtain an Associate Degree as a Physical Therapy Assistant. Once I receive the License, I can practice as an Assistant Physical Therapist in USA, where the average monthly income will be around Rs. 450,000.00 per month. I will be going to New York in August 2012 upon completion of my second year of studies at IIHS. So we are determined to work in USA and make our country proud."

Further elaborating on his thoughts, Mr. Fernando states that "it is wise to look in to all areas in health where excellent opportunities are available. This may sound like a dream yet is closer to reality than I thought. I can now become an American degree holder at a reasonable cost and time. I am proud to be one of the first batch at IIHS and extremely happy with the IIHS programme.

We have an excellent staff at IIHS for Physical Therapy, namely Mr Cyril Surasinghe who is like a father to all of us motivating and directing us and most importantly getting us to the international level with his world wide experience. What we found was to maintain the quality of a programme the students have a great role to play, where the resource staff could direct you and it is us that have to strive by achieving the necessary goals. We also have a great environment to study at IIHS and that also helped us to get better results.

He further shared that "anything can be achieved through hard work, never stop searching for new avenues. Success always lies with such people." I invite all young people in Sri Lanka to join us and the whole world is open to you and many opportunities are waiting for you out there "

Dr Deborah Molnar (PT, DPT, MSEd) Programme Director, Physical Therapy Assistant programme of State University of New York, sharing her views says that "IIHS students recently completed a comprehensive examination in Kinesiology with outstanding results! All students scored above 90% - one student even achieved a perfect score of 100%.

It is obvious that these students have devoted significant time and effort in preparing for this exam to receive transfer credit. I am very pleased with the results and commend the students on their success. SUNY Canton is excited to add students of this academic caliber to our community."

Dr Nihal De Silva (MD, ACOG, MPh), the Dean of IIHS, a Former Professor of Stanford University USA, who has worked in the United States for more than 40 years, stated that IIHS was set up with a view to train high quality healthcare professional, enabling them to take advantage of the many opportunities awaiting our Youth. This is also expressed in the Government policies and as a responsible institute we have responded. The classic example is the students of the above described programme where they would bring foreign revenue to Sri Lanka by performing professional, highly paid and respected jobs in the globe. This is a great way of adding to the Social Capital of Sri Lanka, where each of the students would perform well and make our mother land proud. Our concept was simple yet valuable, we want to make international training programmes affordable to Sri Lankans. We have been very successful in reducing the international training programme cost by 60% - 65% by conducting 2/3rd of the programme in Sri Lanka. This is a great opportunity for talented youth who experience financial constrains for education.

Ms Nishani Kulatunga, The Campus Director of IIHS, expressed her views stating that "our students are growing at a steady pace and this is a great achievement and it has not been an easy task. All credit should go the students and academic staff who have worked tirelessly to understand the level of achievement needed by American standards.

We take great care in ensuring that students have a free access to the study materials, books and other related academic material of State University of New York, through a virtual class room called the Angel site. The SUNY Canton has supported us with study materials which are modern and up to date. I am proud be a part of the great venture.

The registration for the third batch of the Associate Degree programme for Physical Therapy Assistant is now on and the new programme would commence in September 2011. We not only offer affordable programmes to students but also support students through educational loans where Bank of Ceylon has stepped up to the occasion, with an excellent package of education loans in this vital social venture.

Ms. Kulatunga further stated that "all this would not have been possible if not for the support and introduction given by Priyanthi & Padumasiri Dissanayake of Scholarships for USA, and I thank them on behalf of IIHS and SUNY Canton.
