New high-tech facility to store grain, perishables

A long drawn need of storage of Sri Lanka’s agricultural products appears to be over with the launching of GrainPro Portable Granary by Agri Genesis Lanka Ltd - a reinforced PVC developed with Israeli technology. GrainPro Cocoon could be used to store all types of grains, seeds including paddy, corn, wheat and even herbs, spices, beans, lentils, coffee, cocoa, dried fruits, flour, nuts etc.

This cocoon made out of heavy duty, all-weather resistant and reinforced PVC is resistant to gas, moisture, water and UV and comes in different sizes to suit varying needs from one metric ton to 1000 metric tons.

At the launch of this new storage facility held in Colombo recently, Samud Gunasekera, General Manager, Agri Genesis Lanka said that Sri Lanka’s annual paddy production would be around 4.3 million metric tons and said that due to poor storage facilities around 15 to 20% perishes. He said that with different sizes and storing options GrainPro Portable Granary could be an effective solution for Sri Lanka’s paddy storage problem.

He said that hermetic technology of this storage facility allows dry agricultural products storage and is totally environmental friendly with its green technology. It consists of a rodent-resistant design, causes death of insects through oxygen deprivation, and inhibits growth of microorganisms. He said that by using this facility, commodities can be stored for prolonged periods without the use of chemicals and refrigeration, and the result is the aroma, colour and freshness are preserved.
