A shoot out that left a ruling party politician dead and a parliamentarian wounded seriously took the gloss away from the convincing victory the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) secured at last week's local polls.
I thought I must write to you once again — and it is not just to congratulate you on the Blue party's convincing victory at the local government elections, but also to discuss the terrible incident that happened on election day.
The widening trade deficit is of serious concern for the balance of payments. Although there was an overall balance of payments surplus in the first seven months of this year, the current account of the balance of payments is in deficit by a significant amount.

Wickremesinghe has rather optimistically hailed it as the 'beginning of a victorious journey.'
