Moves to play Provincial and Club Cricket concurrently

By S.R. Pathiravithana

There is huge speculation that the 2011/12 Provincial cricket tournament and the Premier Club Cricket tournament will be played concurrently. It is understood that the Cricket Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket has made a strong recommendation that the Provincial Cricket tournament which is considered the major plum in the island also has to be played during the best season for the game - January to March. It is understood that the 60 cricketers contracted by the SLC besides the National players will be selected to play in the Provincial tournament where the venues will be the Khettarama Stadium, Dambulla Stadium, Kurunegala Stadium, Pallekelle Stadium and the Hambantota Stadium.

The system of selection would be to cluster the clubs into provinces and deploy the Provincial base players from the identified areas. The Cricket Committee of SLC will meet the Club representatives on Wednesday to discuss the details of the proposed scheme. At the same time the SLC-CC have to give the clubs time to conduct their Limited Overs Tournament without any encumbrances and the twenty clubs - Tier 'A' and 'B' will conduct their tournament from December 1st to the 17th or 22nd (Date of the final is yet to be finalized).

The Premier three-day Club Cricket tournament will begin on December 29 and will run till March 4.
The SLC-CC are planning to have the Provincial Cricket Tournament at the same time and they feel that this would also be a huge opportunity to the younger breed of players who has just completed the under 23 tournament and the Under 19 players who were in India recently to show their skills and take part in the Premier League tournament while the top grade players are engaged in the Provincial Tournament.
