Rain gutter - revolutionary method to tap rubber during rainy season

Uncertain rains patterns have been a major obstacle of the Rubber plantations. To overcome this problem there are several solutions currently are available. In the Sri Lankan context the solution that is currently being used is the polythene cover. Most plantation owners in Sri Lanka are rather reluctant to use this solution due to the wet bark disease.

Rain Gutter System was invented by an engineer in Malaysia. Due to the research and experiments carried out at the invitation of a large rubber plantation with the backing of the rubber research institute of Malaysia the rain "Rain Gutter System" was invented. "Rain Gutter" system which is a very simple yet an effective method that is currently popular in Malaysia. Most of the major rubber plantations in Malaysia and the plantations managed by the Rubber Research Institute of Malaysia use this method.

The Rain Gutter system is fixed to the rubber tree with a special compound and the rain water that flows through the trunk of the rubber tree is diverted before reaching the tapping panel through the gutter that is fixed to the tree. Due to the simplicity and effectiveness of this system it is very popular not only in Malaysia but also in Thailand and Indonesia.

Through scientific research it has been proven that 90% of the rain loss days could be recovered by using this method. Moreover it is proven that the cost of fixing a rain gutter could be recovered within 4-5 days of tapping. By using the rain gutter profitability and the productivity of rubber plantations could be enhanced tremendously. This method has been experimented in Sri Lanka and the results has been very successful.
