17th Convocation of Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT)

It was the eagerly awaited day of the graduates; IIT's most highlighted occasion, the 17th annual Convocation was held at BMICH on 29th October 2011. The occasion was graced by the chief guest, Dr. Myszka Guzkowska, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of University of Westminster, Deshabandu Surath Wickramasinghe, Dr. Gamini Wickramasinghe and Associate Professor Alfred Perera, Dean of IIT.

Guests were escorted to the hall by a troupe of traditional Kandyan dancers, after which Dean of IIT, Assoc. Prof. Alfred Perera welcomed the audience comprising the chief guest from the University of Westminster UK, special guests, members of the Board of Management, academic staff of IIT, graduands, parents and fellow students who were present to share the evening of celebration.

In his welcome address, Assoc. Prof. Alfred Perera emphasised the importance of education as an essential accomplishment in the corporate world. Following the speech, students in the first, second and placement years were awarded certificates. The audience applauded every single student who received the award.

The enthusiasm of the audience increased as the eagerly awaited moment for special awards arrived. Recognition for all-round performance was awarded to Graduands by the University of Westminster. Geethika Cooray from Information Systems with Business Management and Sheran Corera from Software Engineering degree programmes, were feted for their dynamic commitment in their academic performance as well as basketball, Stage Craft, choir and students' union activities during their undergraduate career at IIT.

Sheran Corera received the award for his achievement of winning GOLD at NBQSA 2011 in the tertiary category, and the best product using Microsoft Technologies. It was highlighted that his research was published at the 2011 CHI Sparks Conference held in Netherlands. Amidst the continuing applause Graduands ascended the stage to receive their awards; the many smiles signifying the hard work that had been duly paid off.

Following the introduction by Deshabandu Surath Wickramasinghe, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Dr. Myszka Guzkowska addressed the gathering, delivering her impressive thoughts on our Graduands' achievements at IIT. She emphasized through the affiliation of IIT with University of Westminster UK, it has enabled Sri Lankan students to obtain a British degree while living with their families, and to be competent and talented professionals locally as well as internationally. Students have excelled to compete at international conferences evident from IEEE publications, NBQSA awards and Google Summer of Code.

She also appreciated the parents' immense effort in encouraging and supporting their children towards their academic career. For Outstanding Achievements in each degree programme, Dr. Gamini Wickramasinghe Gold Medals were awarded to Anisha Fernando of Information Systems with Business Management batch and Champika Samarasinghe of the Software Engineering batch.

The end of the convocation was marked by a Graduate, Sheran Corera, who along with his batch of Graduates appreciated and thanked every helpful hand that was a strength for the success in their academic career. He gave a special tribute to Dr. Gamini Wickramasinghe for his vision in founding an institute of this stature
The hall was full of well wishers, parents and emotional moments of happiness and success that flung around every Graduate and parent leaving them with a priceless memory of a lifetime.
