Conductor Prof. De Quadros is a professor of music at Boston University who has had a number of leadership positions at Boston University, including director of the School of Music, chair of the Music Education Department, chair of the Department of Music in the College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and artistic director of the Tanglewood Institute. Gloria in Excelsis Deo heralds the Christmas spirit

Another festive season is almost upon us and many talented and enthusiastic choirs are revving up for Christmas. One of the quickest off the blocks is the Colombo Philharmonic Choir, who have scheduled their big event for as early as Sunday, November 27 at St. Andrew’s Scots Kirk, Colombo 3.

Denham Pereira will be the organist for this concert entitled “Gloria in Excelsis Deo”, and the choir will be conducted by Manilal Weerakoon. On that evening, expect a typical Phil banquet: rousing big-church pieces by Vivaldi and Parry, majestic Mendelssohn and Brahms, and soothing Bach and Warlock. The second half of the programme is devoted to Christmas music. Together with the beautiful ambience of the century-old Kirk, you are sure to get a great start on your Christmas spirit!

This “amateur” choir who have been singing for over 50 years now have always sought to maintain the high musical standards set by such illustrious past-conductors such as Gerald Cooray and Lylie Godridge.

Add to that Manilal Weerakoon’s three decades of musical association with orchestras and choirs, and the magic fingers of Denham Pereira who has mesmerized audiences in Sri Lanka and England, and the audience can expect a feast of great music and song.
