Anuja, Shanilka outstanding at All Island Table Tennis meet

Anuja Nimesh of Kingswood College Kandy and Shanilka Jinadasa of Maliyadeva Girls’ School Kurunegala emerged as outstanding players in the boy’s and girl’s categories respectively at the All-Island Intermediate and Novices Table Tennis Championship held at Kegalle recently.

The tournament, conducted by the Kegalle District Table Tennis Association was held on December 10 and 11 at St. Mary’s College in Kegalle. Nimesh who won the award for the most outstanding player in the boy’s category was the winner in the Under-18 final where he beat Yasintha Basnayaka of Dharmaraja Kandy by two sets to one. Nimesh lost the first set at 9 points to 11 but bounced back to win the remaining sets at 13-11 and 11-7 to win the top award in the boy’s section. He lost the Under-15 final to Romesh Gattepola of Dharmaraja Kandy by two straight sets with the scores reading 11-6 and 11-7.

Jinadasa of Maliyadeva Girl’s School Kurunegala who was named the most outstanding girl’s player of the tournament annexed both the Under-15 and 18 titles which justified her as the top girl’s player. She beat fellow team-mate Loshini Jayawardana by two sets to one in a thrilling final to clinch the Under-15 title. Jinadasa despite losing the first set by 10 points to 12 made a valiant fight back to win the following sets at 11-9 and 11-9. In the Under-18 final Jinadasa was given a tough fight by Samadhi Hettiarachchi of Mahamaya Girls School Kandy. But Jinadasa sealed the final by two straight sets which gave her a thrilling win after scoring 12-10 and 11-9 in both sets. However Jinadasa failed to clinch a possible triple when she went down fighting in the Intermediate Women’s final to Piumi Deudini of Holy Family Convent Kurunegala. Deudini won the final by two sets to one. She lost the first set at 9-11 and won the following sets at 11-5 and 12-10.

Young Lithmina Mahanama of Wesley Colombo emerged the Intermediate Men’s champion when he got the better of Pawan Hemasinghe of Vidyartha Kandy by two sets to one. Mahanama who lost the opening set badly by 4 points to 11 recorded smashing wins at 11-1 and 11-6 to seal the match. D.N.B. Athauda of Dharmaraja College Kandy beat Kasun Geeshan of Dudley Senanayake Central Tholangamuwa by two sets to nil to win the Men’s Novices title while the Novices Women’s title went to Chami Gangoda of St. Joseph’s Girl’s School Kegalle who beat Vishmika Senaviratne of Pushpadana Kandy by two sets to nil.

  • Under-8 Girls: Thasini Kaushalya (Prajapathi BMV, Ambalangoda) beat Aloka Oshadhini 2-0 (11-9, 11-6)
  • Under-8 Boys: Yasiru Maleesha (Vidyartha, Kandy) beat Matheesha Wickramanayaka (Kegalu Vidyalaya) 2-1 (11-7, 9-11, 11-5)
  • Under-10 Girls: W.I.S. Piyasadi (Sussex College, Kegalle) beat Anuradha Hemachandra (HFC, Kurunegala) 2-0 (14-12, 11-7)
  • Under-10 Boys: Dulaj Ranatunga (Sussex College, Kegalle) beat D.U.R. Dangalla (Dudley Senanayake Central, Tholangamuwa) 2-0 (13-11, 12-10)
  • Under-12 Girls: D.H. Kolambage (Prajapathi BMV, Ambalangoda) beat
  • Loshini Jayawardana (Maliyadeva BV, Kurunegala) 2-0 (13-11, 11-8)
  • Under-12 Boys: Supun Wimalasena (Maliyadeva, Kurunegala) beat Veron De Silva (Dharmasoka, Ambalangoda) 2-1 (11-9, 9-11, 11-5)
  • Under-15 Girls: Shanilka Jinadasa (Maliyadeva BV, Kurunegala) beat Loshini Jayawardana (Maliyadeva BV, Kurunegala) 2-1 (10-12, 11-9, 11-9)
  • Under-15 Boys: Romesh Gattepola (Dharmaraja Kandy) beat Anuja Nimesh (Kingswood Kandy) 2-0 (11-6, 11-7)
