Danushka salvages Nalanda to a draw

By Aubrey Kuruppu

Trinity who did most of the running and called the shots till lunch as the second day had no answer to the bristling aggression of Nalanda skipper Koshan Danushka whose brilliant knock of 89 helped his team to stave off defeat at Asgiriya yesterday. Danushka defended when needed and struck out boldly to include seven sixes and seven fours in his match saving innings.

Leg spinner Akila Jayasundera ran through the Nalanda batting in the first innings to capture five for seven and rout them out for only 61 runs. However, the visitors showed more resilience and grit second time round. Skipper Niroshan Dikwella and Dinuk Wickremanayake impressed with the bat, while the heroic Danushka had a five wicket haul.

Meanwhile Kingswood lost a grand opportunity of putting it past St. Sylvester’s when they collapsed from the overnight score of 83-4 to 105 all out in pursuit of a score of 137. The Sylvestrians made sure there was no collapse second time round as they set the home team a target of 189 in around two hours. The match, played at the Peradeniya Campus grounds, ended in a draw.

Skipper Ruwantha Ekanayake, Waruna Wijesinghe and Hansamal Perera performed well with the bat and off-spinner Faiz Ahamed with the ball for St. Sylvester’s. For the Kingswood side, Nishitha Weerakoon, the captain Tharindu Liyanage and Kasun Bandara did well.
