Another Success story of IIT - a stepping stone to a successful career

A versatile Institution ably nurturing minds to conform to Industry expectations, IIT has been able to consistently maintain a record of achieving top standards both in the education and the Industry for which the Institution grooms its students. The greatest testimonials of this achievement are the success stories of IIT’s past pupils who have gone on to prove their mettle in the real working world beyond the University.

Thusitha Abeyesekera

Thusitha Abeyesekera, Manager Brands at Ceylon Tobacco Company, was the Gold Medalist and holds a First Class in Business Administration from the Manchester Metropolitan University in 2006 in addition to many noteworthy academic and professional achievements.

He is also a senior lecturer in the fraternity of Marketing and Finance. Thusitha is a product of S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia. Speaking glowingly of his experience at IIT, he said “At a time when there were very few options in Sri Lanka for a globally recognized degree, IIT was highly recommended to me by friends who said that the institute was one that other institutes could benchmark with.

This has proved to be true today with IIT holding a leading position in the field of IT and Business education, in spite of many other institutions being present in Sri Lanka”. He further endorsed the Institute by saying “IIT believes in an all round education. In the first year, Soft Skills under the subject of Interpersonal skills are taught to every student. This includes skills such as presentation, behavior, attitudes etc. The Institute also implements assignments which encourage the student to put these soft skills into use together with learning team work. Extracurricular activities promoted throughout the programme, also encourage further development of skills.”

First batch of BMS Biomedical students completed mid course laboratory internship at Ceygen Biotech (Durdans) with the resource persons namely Seated from left : Mr. Indika Jayasinghe, Ms. Udhara Munasinghe, Dr. Y.I.N.S. Gunawardene, Prof. R.S. Dassanayake, Dr. A.A.P.S. Manamperi, Ms. Hemanthini Kalubowila, Ms. Pushpamali De Silva.

He further states, “We are brought to this world by our parents who nurture us, provide and educate us. I’m greatly indebted to my parents for the heights I’ve reached. Similarly, it is our lecturers who provide us with the guidance and support”.

Being responsible for a portfolio of brands at a leading Multi National Company in Sri Lanka, Thusitha realizes the importance of having a positive attitude and professional work ethics. He attributes these to have been influenced by IIT. “At IIT, case studies were a popular method by which we were taught and these have today proved very valuable when applying that knowledge to everyday activities in the organization I work in. The experience gained at IIT has helped me in my current position, particularly in leading my team effectively. People leadership is an importance ingredient for any business manager and something we look for consciously in new recruits as well”.

Having joined under British American Tobacco’s (BAT) Global Management trainee programme in 2006 he has progressed through the key pillars of Brand, Trade and Strategic Planning and Insights. He reminisced his experiences with a glow in his eyes;

“Working at BAT has been a rewarding experience. The exposure provided at the early stages of my career supported by a great organisational culture is a mix hard to find”. He elaborates, “Over the last couple of years I’ve been given exposure to international training, opportunity to work in other competitive European markets as well get hands on experience on Sales and Marketing in a Sri Lankan FMCG context. Incidentally my first interaction with BAT was facilitated through the industrial placement programme conducted by IIT” states Thusitha.

Having gained so much from IIT Thusitha does not hesitate to fully recommend IIT as the place to go to for a quality education that is globally recognized. “A strong academic background lays a solid foundation to an individual’s professional career. IIT helps and gives the necessary background to work in a diverse range of fields. Put this together with a great attitude and hard work you’ve got yourself a recipe for success, concludes Thusitha with a broad smile on his face. www.iit.ac.lk, admissions@iit.ac.lk, Hot line: 0722 727272
