The don’t care attitude of drivers has resulted in many tragic deaths of elephants in the Karuwalagaswewa and Tabbowa areas along the Puttalam-Anuradhapura road.

Despite well-displayed warning signs which indicate the places where elephants usually cross, a number of accidents take place because drivers do not pay attention to them.

Within a month two tragic incidents of elephants falling victim to speeding vehicles were reported.
In one incident a female elephant was killed while in the other a calf died.

Our pictures portray the incidents. In one an elephant calf was thrown thirty metres from where a speeding vehicle collided with it.
In May a female elephant succumbed to its injuries, a few days after it was hit by a vehicle.     However, the drivers who were responsible for the deaths of these elephants have not yet been apprehended.
