Directed by Vincente Minnelli this 1958 musical film is based on the 1944 novella by the same name Colette and it features songs with lyrics by Lerner; music by Frederick Loewe, arranged and conducted by André Previn.The film was the basis for an unsuccessful stage musical produced on Broadway in 1973.
Weary of the conventions of the Parisian society, a rich playboy and a youthful courtesan-in-training enjoys a platonic friendship, but it did not stay platonic for long.This film won 9 Academy Awards including the Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay , Best Art Direction , Best Cinematography , Best Costume Design , Best Film Editing , Best Original Score and Best Original Song.
In 1991, Gigi was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” The film is considered the last great MGM musical and the final great achievement of the Freed Unit, headed by producer Arthur Freed, although he would go on to produce several more films, including the ‘musical Bells Are Ringing’ in 1960.
