Giving that floral touch to weddings
Flowers give colour to our world and no special occasion is complete without them. For the past three years, Dharshini de Mel’s world has been filled with flowers both natural and artificial, candles, satin, ribbons and even twigs. Her taste for colour and creativity is evident in the many weddings and other occasions she has decorated with her creations.

Flowery Decor is the floral service Dharshini launched three years ago. “We started three years ago with just me, my husband and my two daughters. By now we have more than 15 employees and yet for every occasion, we make sure that one of us goes, so as to make sure everything is perfect,” explains Dharshini when we meet her in the busy wedding month of June.
The flowers come from Nuwara Eliya, Haputale and Bandarawela and Dharshini creates decor for any occasion taking on hall décor, magul poru, settee back, bridal bouquets, bridesmaids and flower girls bouquets, flower baskets, car décor, garlands all from her home. She will also arrange cake and kiribath structures, photography, magul bera, ashtaka and Kandyan dancers, etc.
Dharshini studied beauty culture and had her own salon before she branched into the flower industry. “Even at the salon I made bouquets and flower décor and greatly enjoyed it. Now I’m doing what I love full time,” she smilingly adds.
Up to now, they haven’t done any two weddings alike. Each wedding is different and has a unique quality. “Even though it’s just another wedding for us, we make it as special and as unique as possible, because we know, it’s the couple’s special day and we just want to make it a dream come true for them and more.”
Traditions still prevail, she says most using white for church weddings as the wedding day. “But when doing the hotel décor, we add a touch of the bridesmaids’ colour also and try to make it more colourful,” she says.
Despite their growing business, Dharshini is determined to keep the personal touch and hence limits herself to two functions per day. So far she has handled weddings in almost all the hotels and churches in Colombo and has gone as far as Negombo and Kurunegala also, she says.
