Seats grabbed like hot cakes!

Some DU colleges forced to over-admit students

The few paltry courses still open in Delhi University’s better colleges were grabbed like hot cakes on Tuesday, with some colleges forced to over-admit students in a few courses on Day One of admissions for those coming under the third cut-off list.

“We are completely full in all the courses for which we brought out a third list, but we are obligated to admit all students meeting the cut-offs, thereby we will be continuing with admissions until Thursday,” said Ramjas College Principal Dr. Rajendra Prasad. The college had re-opened admissions to its B.Com. (Honours) course with a reduced cut-off in the range of 97.75 to 95.75 owing to several withdrawals after the release of the second list. Its B.Com. and Hindi (Honours) courses also figured in the third list.
ECA TRIALS

The trials for extra-curricular activities have already begun in most colleges, with some discrepancies on the total number of seats to be allotted under this quota arising in Ramjas College, which had decided to seek a clarification from the University on Tuesday. The sports trials have almost ended and the candidates making the cut will be decided on Thursday.

Hindu College, which had left open its English (Honours) course with a substantially reduced cut-off at 80.25 per cent, saw its seats filling up quickly. “We have 39 seats and we have admitted 34. Even the B.Com. (Honours) course which we had left open for OBC admissions with a marginally reduced cut-off in the range of 94.5 to 91.5 is almost full with 62 of the 69 seats already taken. Our Science courses are also getting filled quickly,” said Hindu College Principal Dr. Pradyum Kumar, adding that the prospects of a fourth list appeared dim.

However, there is still hope for those who have not got a seat yet. “There are always withdrawals in the Science courses from those wishing to pursue professional courses for which admissions start at a later date. Even humanities have withdrawals from those wishing to pursue Law or something,” said Dr. Kumar, adding that ECA trials were also a good bet. “We are obligated to give everyone, who has applied, a shot at the ECA trials for which we have a quota in each course. The sports and ECA quota should be five per cent together and we have just concluded our cricket, basketball and swimming trials,” he said.

The total sanctioned strength of the college is 752 seats which have already been exceeded as a total of 983 admissions were completed by Tuesday. Last year, the college had over-admitted students and had a total strength of 1,200.
Hansraj College, which had kept open most of its courses, also said they had seen good admission figures and were expecting all their courses to be full by Thursday, unless there were withdrawals.

Seats in the South Campus colleges were also being grabbed up by eager students with Sri Venkateswara College reporting 79 admissions on Tuesday. “We have admitted 31 against 92 seats in B.Com. (Honours), 42 against 92 in B.Com,. and 25 against the 39 available seats in the popular Economics (Honours),” said Sri Venkateswara College media cocoordinator Dr. V.C. Rao.
The ECA trials have already begun here and Tuesday saw a successful run at the choreography trials, with music scheduled for Wednesday and dramatics for Thursday.

The all-girls Lady Shri Ram College had kept open its B.Com. (Honours), Economics (Honours) and Sanskrit (Honours), with both the Commerce streams seeing a steady stream of admission- seekers.

“Our B.Com. (Honours) saw several admissions seekers and it looks like it might be completely full by the last day,” said LSR College media cocoordinator Dr. Kannika.-thehindu.com
