Lanka computer users unaffected by internet blackout

View(s):

There were no reports of Sri Lanka’s internet users being affected by the internet blackout on July 9, said Rohana Palliyaguru, senior security engineer of Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (SLCERT).

He said that the DNS changer virus software had very little impact on Sri Lanka, as SLCERT did not receive any complaints of any infections or internet blackouts.

Internet users were warned last month of a malicious software programme that changes the Domain Name Settings of computers and redirects users to fraudulent websites.

The internet blackout was enforced by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which shut down several web servers through which infected users’ web traffic had been travelling. The shutdown was enforced due to an investigation of a sophisticated internet fraud ring that used servers to manipulate people’s web browsing.
