Looking back at beginnings of Abstract in Sri Lanka
View(s):Dr. H.A. Karunaratne’s latest exhibition – “The Father of Sri Lankan Abstract Art in Retrospect” from June 20 to 30 is being held under the auspices of the Alliance française de Kandy.
It is presented by Mr. and Mrs. Shamil Pieris from selected works by the artist in their collection. Assistant High Commissioner of India in Kandy A. Natarajan will declare open the exhibition.
Karunaratne’s formal academic training began at the Govt. College of Fine Arts where in the years of 1952-1958, he trained under great art masters J. D. A. Perera, David Paynter and Stanley Abeysinghe.
In 1959 -1961, Mr. Karunaratne won a scholarship from the Japanese Government. In 1965, on a Fulbright scholarship, he studied graphic art at the Pratt Institute in USA. In 1962 he joined the Institute of Aesthetic Studies, Art and Sculpture Department, University of Kelaniya and served for many years, retiring in 1986.
He has held several exhibitions from 1956 onwards and won many awards both in Sri Lanka and aboard.
