Jaywalking: What’s sauce for the goose is also sauce for the gander
Last Tuesday, July 24, police began enforcing the law against jay walkers who did not adhere to pedestrian crossing rules.
Our cameraman was present when the police pounced on people who crossed the road outside the zebra crossing.
Pedestrians however complained they found the law dense, as they were now forced to walk quite some distance to find a pedestrian crossing.
“We face much difficulty due to the implementation of this rule. Earlier we simply crossed to the opposite side of the road in front of our office to get the bus, now we have to walk some metres to reach a pedestrian crossing,” said Malkanthi Rathnayake who works in a mercantile establishment in Colombo.
“Government should first ensure there are sufficient pedestrian crossings before implementing such a rule,” she added.
What is worse however, is that while police order pedestrians to cross at specified crossings, they themselves openly flout the rule.
Our cameraman caught two policemen crossing the road within a few metres from the pedestrian crossing.
Members of the public also complained that many crossings were not equipped with colour lights.
