Samahan – linking ancient herbal remedies and modern medicine
Link Natural Products (Pvt) Ltd (Link Natural), launched in1982 and now a fully-fledged medical laboratory, has emerged as a meeting point of indigenous ayurvedic and modern western medicine. This has enabled the company to reinvent its popular Link Samahan to capture national and international markets.
Last week, Link Natural took a group of journalists to its factory in Dompe where they were enlightened on the results of a recent “Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial (RCCT) conducted in Sri Lanka that has proved that the remedy for the symptoms of catarrh, colds and upper respiratory ailments is Link Samahan, which has been used by millions of people in Sri Lanka as well as in many countries around the world.
Samahan is an age old and well known ayurvedic medical treatment in Sri Lanka, but according to Link Natural the proper Samahan formulae should contain 14 ingredients and all what they have done was to mix all these 14 ingredients, together scientifically, and bring up as the only known treatment for colds, catarrh and respiratory disorders.
At the media conference in response to a query by a journalist, Prof Colvin Gunaratna, a former Chairman of the State Pharmaceuticals Corporation and a Senior Professor of the Faculty of Medicine in the Colombo University, said that medicinal products that are manufactured at Link Natural are usually based on indigenous ayurveda formulae. But where appropriate and to obtain the best results to cure diseases, Link Natural would go to any extent even using advanced western medicinal formulae and also use the best advanced medical and scientific technology to obtain the ultimate result of curing diseases and bring solace to human life. He said that it is time to leave all petty quibbles on which is superior and work towards a common goal of curing and preventing diseases.
While going around the factory, Chamini Wickramatilleke, Scientist in charge of the Quality Assurance Laboratory and Dr Ranjith Gamage, one of the medical research panelists of Link Natural, confirmed to the Business Times that they are experimenting and researching on various new medicinal product avenues.
Ms Wickramatilleke said they are working very hard to invent a cure for diabetics and the experiments and research are now at the clinical trial stage. They were much hopeful that they could have a breakthrough towards a permanent cure. She said that while maintaining the highest quality standards in their medical laboratory, prescribed by the World Health Organization to ensure consistency of strengths, taste and colour, etc of all the medicinal products, they also experiment on various new products. She said “There are several products in the pipeline and they are at varying stages of experimentation. Medicinal products for permanent diabetics cure are at the clinical trial test level and we are yet to analyze the final results.”
