Happy Birthday Sir….
View(s):He has a well built body, a pleasant countenance and greets everyone with a charming smile. He plays many roles in diverse fields in society – at time he is a teacher, at another, a lecturer and sometimes, even a friend. He is none other than on of the top-most academics of the present era: Doctor Prathiba Mahanamahewa.
I first encountered Dr.Mahanamahewa when I was reading for my Bachelor of Laws Degree at the Faculty of Law, University of Colombo. I was in my second year at that time, and I well remember how Dr.Mahanamahewa walked into the class, surveyed us students with a sharp gaze, softened with a smile and commenced the lecture in his own endearing style.
At times we felt that we were participating in a live drama, with us students as the spectators and Dr.Mahanamahewa as the actor. Looking back at those times, I now realize that he had the incomparable knack of explaining even the most complex legal theory in a simple and understandable manner.
Dr.Mahanamahewa completed his primary and secondary education at Royal College Colombo 07 and thereafter gained entrance to the faculty of law at the University of Colombo. He completed his Degree with flying colors, and completed his attorney-at-law exam with first class honors. He has served the Faculty of Law in many capacities; first as an assistant Lecturer, then a lecturer and finally as a senior lecturer and Student Councilor.
Dr.Mahanamahewa obtained his Masters Degree in commercial law at the University of Melbourne and his PhD Degree at the University of Queensland, in Australia. At present He remains one of the foremost academics and lawyers in the fields of commercial law and cyber law in Sri Lanka. To date, he has written numerous articles and presented many papers both locally and globally in this regard and has even helped to draft legislation. Currently Dr.Mahanamahewa lectures in many local and international universities in the capacity of a guest lecturer.
Dr. Prathiba Mahanamahewa
Dr.Mahanamahewa has been nominated for many awards both at national and international levels. In the year 2000, he was presented with an award for the numerous services rendered to the field of human rights and in the year 2003 the International Law Society presented him the award for the Best Junior Lawyer of the year, thus bringing much pride and recognition to our small nation.
Recently Dr.Mahanamahewa’s career reached a pivotal point when he was appointed as the Dean of the Kotalawala Defense University. He also acts in the capacity of the commissioner of Human Rights commission in Sri Lanka, thereby enabling him to use his experience and knowledge to protect, develop and uphold human rights in our country.
What I have listed above is just a mere fraction of the services that Dr.Mahanamahewa has rendered to our country. In my personal experience, the advice and knowledge he has imparted to us students will no doubt, be a great help to our future careers. I would like to conclude this article by wishing Dr.Mahanamahewa a very happy birthday on the 08th of August and hope that he will continue to achieve every success in all his future Endeavour’s.
