Sharmal and Madusha enjoy strong start
Shamal Dissanayake followed up his Under 18 singles triumph at the Junior National Championships with an equally emphatic doubles victory in the 97th National Tennis Championships, pairing up with Madusha Wijesuriya to dismantle the team of Yasitha De Silva and Supun Pathirage 6-3, 6-1, at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association courts yesterday.
Both Shamal and Madusha looked an imperious duo on the court, taking control of the game from the very outset. Their superior volleying and powerful ground strokes were too much for Yasitha and Supun in the opening set, although the two of them did reel off a series of spectacular winners.
However, after losing the first set 6-3, their confidence dipped and they soon found their serve being broken on multiple occasions. They eventually won one game in the set but that was all Madusha and Sharmal were willing to give them, as they went on to vanquish their opponents 6-1 in the second.
The victorious pair is set to meet Vimuktha De Alwis, the other Under 18 finalist, and Sankha Athukorale in the next round. In some of the day’s other fixtures Melissa Jayawardane beat Gaveshini Abeygunawardena 6-4, 6-0, Supun Pathirage swept Anil Nanayakara 6-0, 6-0, Meshal Sinnen beat Nipuna Ambanpola 6-0, 6-0, Guyanga Weerasekera defeated Chehan Fernando 6-0, 6-2, Heera Ashiq beat Dhanushka Abeywardena 6-2, 6-1, Vimuktha De Alwis beat Prasanna Athauda 6-1, 6-0 and Sharmal Dissanayake beat Shabeer Huzair in a walkover.
