At school we learn the importance of hygiene in food and water. Yet a majority of adults seem to have forgotten the consequences of consuming contaminated food and water.

A direct result of this has been the burgeoning in the number of cases of water-borne disease cases in the city of Colombo.
The Chief Medical Officer of the Colombo Municipal Council, Dr. Pradeep Kariyawasam told the Sunday Times, Colombo’s ground water was contaminated due to the increased number of toilet pits and construction taking place over water and sewer lines most of which were corroded.

Our photographer Indika Handuwela captured scenes of food being prepared from wayside water sources. Water collected in filthy cans which were given to customers at wayside eating places.
