The prevailing drought has brought out the worst in people, as they resort to “unconventional” methods of breeding livestock.
At Arachchikatuwa in the Puttalam district, an enterprising entrepreneur has converted what was once a waterway into a pig sty under a small bridge along the Sitta Madama Road by completely walling off one side of the bridge.

Residents fear that with the onset of the monsoon the area will be flooded as the pig sty will block water flowing under the bridge.
M.S.H. Luseina the Divisional Secretary Arachchikatuwa, said the issue of the pig sty had been brought to his notice and he would look into the matter.

The back of the pig sty has been completely walled off, blocking the flow of water under the bridge.

The pigsty looks as if its here to stay. A tube well has been sunk to bathe and provide the pigs with water.

Foraging pigs, who are let out during the day, have dug up large pits in the area.
